I am interested in locating someone to research the probate and wills from 1808.

Can you provide the name of someone who would be willing to research who is knowledgeable of the courts. I am willing to provide remuneration.

Objective: To obtain a copy of the will and probate records of John SMITH, I am trying to prove Sarah (SMITH) VAIL is the daughter of John.

Problem: I have seen an abstract of a will but suspect that it was incorrectly abstracted. Spouse of Sarah SMITH is reported to be Ira VAIL. Ira VAIL is the son of Sarah and Asa VAIL. I was unable to locate the will in the Family History Film.

John SMITH is reported to have died in 1808 in Tioga County, later Chemung. Sarah (Smith) Vail died in 1826.

I did find an Administration request for a female VAIL in 1826 by a John SMITH (son or brother of Sarah?) in the films.

Can you help?

I am looking for information about the WHITE’s Patent Bent Chair factory that was built in Willseyville, Tioga Co, NY in about 1886.

I have a photo of my great grandfather, James EVANS, seated in a fancy rocker in front of a mill in Willseyville and am curious to find out more about the factory and possibly who may have worked there. More pictures of the factory to compare to the one I have to verify that is indeed where he was photographed would be a nice addition. James and Ada (LEWIS) EVANS moved from Caroline, Tompkins Co., to Willseyville after 1910.

Any new information about this family, about the factory or about Willseyville in general is appreciated.

I am looking for traces of Verdine BUCHANAN (b. 1799) and Amy (Lee) BUCHANAN (b. 1797).

Their children’s death certificates lists New York locations as their birthplaces.

Elizabeth (Buchanan) COWAN: Bath, NY;
Mary (Buchanan) SHAKESPEARE: Oswego, NY.

FindAGrave Memorial #68283367 (Tuscola County, Michigan) for a daughter, Louisa (BUCHANAN) LINDSAY (b. May 15, 1832) quotes her marker as stating she was born in “Tyoge, New York.” The closest place to that spelling would seem to be Tioga and it would be easy to confuse Oswego for Owego.

Any help in resolving the place names or any informations about these BUCHANANs would be welcome.

I am researching Thomas DARMODY (1833 Ireland - ?) and his wife, Mary LARKIN (1840 Ireland - ?) who are in the census 1860 Candor, 1870 Owego and 1880 for Candor, Tioga.

They had sons:

John DARMODY (1862 New York – 1939 New Jersey),
William DARMODY (Mar 2, 1869 New York – Mar 5, 1940 Freehold, New Jersey – my great grandfather),
Hugh DARMODY (1874 New York – 1943 Binghampton, New York),
Martin John DARMODY (1879 – 1976 Garden City, New York),
Joseph Francis DARMODY ( 1876 - ?), Catherine (1869 - ?),
Thomas DARMODY (1865 - ?),
Michael DARMODY ( 1870 - ?)
James DARMODY (1866 -?).

Strange fact that Martin John DARMODY’s WW2 draft registration states he was born in Kirkenny, Ireland in 1879 and WW1 Draft card states he is a naturalized citizen.

I have picked through Ancestry.com and other on line sites and also obtained several death certificates, but no birth certs.

Any help finding more information would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching the KRESS family.

Jacob and Ann KRESS sold their property to their son, John, in 1817 around the time John's son, George Clinton KRESS, was born.

When John died 1827 leaving Catherine/Cateron a widow, the court appointed John LIGHT and Samuel D. KRESS administrators of their estate.

John LIGHT in 1820 and 1825, lived next to father Lodowick LIGHT. In 1830 census he lived between Wait SMITH and Isaac BOARDMAN where John KRESS had lived.

Wonder when and how, John LIGHT got there property, after John KRESS died (1827).

John's father, Lodowick LIGHT, lived until 1830, Mother died 1842

Did John's wife, Catherine KRESS, live in her house with John LIGHT (her brother)? One child was George C., now abt. 10. Catherine lost a child about 1829.

Sept 15, 1836 Catherine KRESS purchased 1/4 acre from BOARDMAN for $57.48.

QUESTIONS:

1. I do not understand why John LIGHT moved from living next to his father Lodowick (1820 census) into John and Catherine KRESS' house. If it was Catherine/Cateron's house in 1830 (female, vs male ownership at that date??).

2. Did she sell it, was it taken away from her because of John and her debts????

3. Any clues as to where Catherin KRESS lived until 1836. Did she live with John LIGHT or father Lodowick?

I am looking for a deed that might enlighten what went on.

Is there anyone that can help me.

I am researching Peter SHEEHAN (born 1833 Ireland) and Bridget MIHIGAN (born Nov 1833 Kilmoe Parish, Co Cork, Ireland)

They were married in Waverly, NY between 1852 – 1856.

Peter SHEEHAN is the son of Peter SHEEHAN and Ellen WILSONREILLY. There were nine children in this family.

I’m researching the WILSON surname of ancestors who lived in Owego, Tioga Co. and area. They are:

John P. WILSON b. about 1785, who was married to Catherine. John died on Nov. 25 1864 and Catherine died on Dec. 1, 1864. I have found these 2 people in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census of Owego, Tioga Co. They had family listed in the 1840 one, but only the head of family name and then just numbers in age groups.

As far as I can figure (without any concrete evidence) their children were:

Catherine Jane – b. 27 July, 1808
Barbara Anne – b. about 1810
James – B. Sept. 1815
R. (female) – b. about 1820

Not sure if any other children.

I know that James became a doctor and after doing many other things like farming, traveling salesman, worked with a circus. He opened the Owego drug store on Lake Street in 1857 and started practicing medicine in Owego. He wrote a book called “The Family Companion and Physician on Reformed Botanical Principles and Treating of the Symptoms and Remedies of Acute Diseases” (long title). He built the Wilson Opera House with brick blocks on North Avenue and built his residence on Main Street. With his son-in-law, Dr. P.S. STEARNS, he built the Park hotel. He had a livery business with George W. Sweet. In 1876 he was elected as President of Owego Village. He was married 3 times and had a son named Dr. Darius Wilson who lived in Boston. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Owego. I do not have confirmation of any of this, just a letter from a relative to my aunt in 1979.

Catherine Jane is my g. g. grand mother and I would like to find out more about her family and find vital documents and prove parentage, etc. if possible.

There was another note that said that at least 2 of the children, James and Catherine, were born in Sharon Springs, Schoharie Co. NY. But again, no proof.

Any help, suggestions or information regarding this family would be appreciated.

Thank you, Judy Carleton
