I am looking for any and all information on Roxana FERRIS, born in Tioga county on Feb. 20, 1820. She married Elijah LAKE about 1840, probably in Spencer. Elijah LAKE bought land from Stephen FERRIS (m. Deborah MOSHER), whom I surmise is the father of Roxana. Elijah and Roxana moved west around the mid-1840s, going first to Erie, NY (or PA?), then to Wisconsin, and finally to Iowa where both died.

As nearly as I can interpret census records Stephen and Deborah had the following children:

Male b. abt. 1815
Female b. abt. 1817
Male b. abvt. 1819
Female b. abt. 1820 (This is the child I believe is very likely Roxana)
Two children born between 1820 and 1830. One possibly Stephen Jr. In one census these children are M&F, in another M&M
Emma, b. 1833
Charles, b. 1835
Lucy, b. 1837
Lewis, b. 1840

I am particularly interested in verifying that Stephen FERRIS and Deborah (MOSHER) FERRIS are the parents of Roxana, and in finding the ancestry of Stephen and Deborah. Also, names and dates of birth for unidentified children.

Thank you.

I am looking for any information on Harvey George MARSHALL and his parents.

Harvey was born abt 1801 in NY and died 12 July 1866 in Flat Rock, Ripley Co., Indiana.

He married Eunice HULL, probably in Broome Co., NY abt. 1820.

Eunice was b. 1799 in CT, the dau. of George HULL and Jemima WELLMAN

About 1829 Harvey and Eunice moved to Bradford Co. PA, which is next to Broome Co., NY. There they had seven of their children. Harvey and family then migrated to Ripley Co., IN around 1837 as their son William L. was born there.

Harvey G. MARSHALL was a farmer and in 1843, the Flat Rock Church was organized in their home. Their home was also a station on the underground railroad before the slaves were freed.

It is believed that Eunice later lived with her daughter Polly and husband, James C. PRINTY, before her death circa after 1880. Both Harvey and Eunice are buried in the Flat Rock Cem., Jackson Twp, Ripley Co., IN, but no stones mark their graves as of 1981.

Their children are:

1. Mary "Polly" MARSHALL b. 20 Jul 1821 Berkshire, NY, d. 1885 Flat Rock, IN.
2. Susan Lauraetta MARSHALL b. 11 Aug 1824 Spencer, Tioga Co., NY
3. Martha Ann MARSHALL b. 8 Jan 1826 d. Bef 1910 Wilburn, Cleburne Co., AR
4. George Harvey MARSHALL b. 14 Nov 1828, Berkshire, Broome Co., NY, d. 7 Mar 1902 Estacada, Clackamas Co., OR.(My G-Grandfather)
5. Pluma MARSHALL b. 27 Oct 1830 Sheshequin, Bradford Co. PA d. 4 Nov 1916 Clarkville, Clark Co., IL.
6. Eliza MARSHALL b. 3 Feb 1832, Sheshequin, PA, d. 22 Jan 1902 Ripley Co., IN.
7. James Ezra MARSHALL b. 21 Aug 1835 BradfordCo., PA, d-Abt 1904
8. William Lawson MARSHALL b. 14 April 1837, Ripley Co., IN, d. 21 June 1862

If you can give me any help on decendants, ancesters or siblings, of Harvey George MARSHALL, I would be most grateful.

Researching the BARR/BAER family that lived in Tioga Co. approx. 1845-1860.

Some of the BARR's went on to Minnesota, then to South Dakota & Washington State.

Nicholas BARR married Emily MUNDY of Barton, was a shoemaker, first in Barton, later in Cayuta (Schuyler) and Horseheads (Chemung).

I have the story of the BARR's arrival in the US from Bavaria (walked from end of railroad line at Middletown to Nichols -- in January 1844) written by Lawrence BARR (Lorenz BAER), who was 5 1/2 years of age when they came to the US.

I am researching the PIXLEY family in Tioga Co.

In searching for my family on the 1930 Federal Census, I found several missing Towns on the Ancestry.com version of Tioga Co. census, including Tioga Town. Realizing boundaries and names change, I have contacted an Historian there to find out which Towns should be on this census. If we determine there are missing areas, I will notify Ancestry.

I have searched the full census as it appears on Ancestry, and didn't find my grandparents, who were living in Straits Corners. Has anyone else found this problem and possibly found another source?

Thanks.

I'm looking for Lacey YORK. He married Florence Louise CARMER. I would like to know where Lacey and Florence were married and it looks like they might have been married on March 5,1893. I know that they had seven children with six living.

Charles C. York - b. 12/09/1893 d. 12/12/1893
Clarence E. York - b. 11/26/1895 d. 12/17/1958
Harold Ace York - b 1/3/1898 d. 4/1/1980
Harry Chester York - b 8/24/1900 d. 9/1958
Eva Mae York - b 10/6/1902
Donald Marian York - b 6/9/1905 d. 3/10/1984
Kenneth Walter York - b 1/22/1907 d. 2/6/1972

In the census there is no mention of Eva and Harry.

Looks like Lacey might have been born Feb. 1869.

Florence might have been born in Illinois around 1876 but not sure on that. Her parents were R S Carmer and Sarah. She had a brother Charles.

Lived in Newark Valley, Berkshire, and Owego.

My father, Donald YORK, was born in Candor, NY.

It looks like the YORKs came from Pa.

I have found that Lacey's father and mother were Abram and Lois.

Abram's parents were Andrew and Catharine YORK.

Thank you.

I am doing research on Sylvester KELSEY and I need your help.

How would I locate a birth record for 1809 in Spencer? My G-8 Grandfather, Sylvester KELSEY, was born there in 1809 and his son was born there also, Selah G. KELSEY in 1830. Selah went on to Missouri but I think Sylvester remained in New York.

Sylvester’s sister, Elizabeth, married Harrison RANDOLPH in Halsey Valley. Is that in the same general neighborhood? And his daughter, Rachael, married Charles RANDOLPH in Halsey Valley, too.

Anyway, my trail has run cold on tracking Sylvester’s ancestors and I thought birth records might have a clue. Or, marriage records, too. He married a Hannah.

I’d appreciate any direction you can give me.

Thanks!

Researching the TOMPKINS family name and have the following information about a relative living in the town of Spencer in Tioga County.

It is mentioned in a book review on Spencer, page 449.

The mention is of a Josiah TOMPKINS coming from Oxford England in 1836. I have in my pocession a newspaper cutting, including a drawing of James TOMPKINS and a lithograph of his homestead.

We believe he was a relative of ours.

I am doing my family history and would like to know more about this TOMPKINS family.

We believe he came with his mother a Hannah TOMPKINS and was joined by two brothers, one of which must have been Josiah.

If you can through any light on the family I would be grateful.

Thank you for your help.

I am looking for the any information on the following members of the RYAN family.

Thomas RYAN (In Tioga County from about 1849-1868, born in Ireland, immigrated and came to New York, then moved to Badger, Iowa). Records from St. Patrick's Parish indicate he was confirmed at that Church in Owego, New York on June 5, 1860. It is also possible that he lived in Waverly, New York.

Catherine (nee Duggan) RYAN (In Tioga County from about 1849-68, born in Ireland, immigrated and came to New York, then moved to Badger, Iowa) Records from St. Patrick's Parish indicate she was confirmed at that Church in Owego, New York on June 5, 1860. It is also possible that she lived in Waverly, New York. Thomas and Catherine had several children while residing in Tioga County, New York:

Margaret A. RYAN (Born in Tioga County, New York on May 9, 1861 and moved to Badger, Iowa in about 1868-69)

James W. RYAN (Born January 30,1863 in Tioga County, New York, moved to Badger, Iowa in about 1868-69)

Elizabeth (Born 1865 in Tioga County,New York, moved to Badger, Iowa in about 1868-69)

John T. (Born June 13, 1868 in Tioga County, New York, moved to Badger, Iowa that same year-1869)

The time frames listed above are believed to be the approximate dates the family members lived in Tioga County.

We do not yet know the village(s) or township(s) where they lived in Tioga County, but from the baptism records, beleive they lived in Owego, or possibly Waverly. Thomas RYAN worked for the railroad, and we do not know for certain whether is was the Erie Railroad, as has been suggested by people we have contacted in Tioga County.

Thank you, and please let me know when this information is posted.

Josh Payne Tue Mar 29, 2005 Email address invalid - 1 Oct 2020

I am seeking information, descendants, and ancestors, of a PAYNE Family that lived in Tioga County in the mid to late 1800's.

Ellis E. PAYNE lived in Maine, Broome County, but was listed in the 1887-88 Directory of Newark Valley. Anson W. PAYNE, his brother, and Anson W. PAYNE, his father and his wife Betsey, lived in Newark Valley for some time.

The older Anson had a brother (as well as nine other siblings), Henry, about whom I have NO other information. I have found a Henry PAYNE listed also in Newark Valley, but have no proof if he is related.

I am seeking any further information about this PAYNE family, especially the elder Anson's parents, Edward and Hannah, and their respective ancestors. I have extensive information about their descendants which I will gladly share with researchers of this family.

I would greatly appreciate any help.

I looked at the listings for the North Spencer, NY cemetery and did not find my father, Loyd P. SMITH.

He was born 9-10-1894 (I am pretty sure his marker says 1895) and died 4-21964.

He has a military marker.

I would appreciate someone checking this out (if you do indeed do this) for me to see if he was overlooked in this listing.

Thank you very much.

Daniel McGILIVERY b.Aug 1 1802, Argyle, spouse, Catherine LANCASTER, b. Jan 31, 1803 at New Cornwall, Orange Co. N.Y.

The following is only conjecture on my part. This is where I need help.

Donald McGILLVRA"s "WILL", (Son of John McGILIVERY) recorded Nov. 5, 1812, leaves to his son's Archibald & Daniel ????????????????

The son Archibald had a son Hugh, born 1800, Washinton Co., as per 1865 census, Tompkins Co., Town of Caroline, NY. (also a son George of Tompkins Co. and Archibald of St. Lawrence Co., NY.

Archibald sold property in Washington Co., Town of Argyle in 1806(Liber B, Page 339 and he next appears in 1810 census of Tioga Co., Town of Spencer, NY, which became Tompkins Co., Town of Caroline on Feb. 22, 1811.

I find no mention of these McGILLVRA's until 1840 census of Tompkins Co. Town of Caroline. Both Hugh and George appear at same location as in 1810.

Ouestion.1 Archibald never reappears. Were they missed by census taker in 1820-30 or did Archibald die and wife remarry?

I am trying to establish that this Archibald is the son of Donald and the father of Hugh. Hugh is my 3GGrandfather. Hugh had brother, George, of Tompkins Co.

Hugh marries Elizabeth CHAMBERS, daughter of Abraham & Mary Jeanette CHAMBERS.

Hugh died March 21.1872, at home of son, Isaac, Town of Candor, Tioga Co. Buried ?? Hugh resided in Caroline his entire life.

3. Josiah, b, 1835, m, Christina LYNCH
Children- Elsworth (Photographer In Ithaca) and Violet (died young)
4. Archibald, died in the Civil War, 1862.
Please any information appreciated.
