Wilma E. Cole was born at Dryden (Tioga County), New York on July 5, 1898. She was the daughter of Andrew Cole and Carrie Hammond. It is believed that she grew up in the town of Richford, New York and attended the local schools. The extent of her education is not known.

Wilma Cole was remembered by one of the elder residents of Newark Valley. In a correspondence from 1977, the following observation was offered by Mrs. Lena Bushnell (1890-????).

WILMA COLE SHOULTES JOHNSON - her birthplace was either Dryden or Richford, as her parents lived in both places. I knew Wilma very well as she worked for me for a time. It was sort of a May-December wedding, but she was a very likable girl with luscious big brown eyes. I well remember when Lloyd (1920-1920) died, but I had forgotten that he was born after Erman had died.

Wilma E. Cole married Erman Francis Shoultes around 1917. Erman Francis Shoultes was born at Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York on August 10, 1872. He was the son of Ira Adam Shoultes (12Oct1844-5Mar1922) and Nancy M. Schoolcraft (7Oct1841-10Jan1921) and a widower with four children. The youngest son, Stacey Erman (30Jul1907- ) was living with his sister at the time of their marriage. It is believed that Erman and Wilma moved to the village of Catatonk (Tioga County), New York where Erman as a farm laborer. There were two sons born to them. Erman Shoultes died on March 3, 1920, two months before the birth of their son Lloyd.

Wilma E. Cole Shoultes married Joseph Johnson in 1924. The story of their married life is not known at the time of this writing.

Wilma E. Cole Shoultes Johnson spent her later years as a resident of Syracuse, New York. The author remembers his grandfather, Jay E. Shoultes (22Jul1899- ) telling him of a visit from Wilma during the summer of 1969. Jay had little to say about the early period of his life and only disclosed that Wilma was seeking information about the family.

Wilma taught Interior Decorating for the Onieda County Home Bureau for many years while living in Syracuse. She was fluent in German, Spanish, and Yiddish and worked in a supporting role with Syracuse University. According to her son Robert (4Apr1919- ), an adventure in her later years was a trip to Egypt to visit professors who had stayed at her home during their visitations at Syracuse University. Wilma also had a fitness training center and worked hard to maintain her personal fitness and health.

Wilma E. Cole Shoultes Johnson died of heart disease. It is believed that she is buried at Willow Glen Cemetery at Dryden, New York.
