William Erman Shoultes was born at Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York on May 11, 1894. He was the only child of Melvin Ozeas Shoultes (19Sep1868-15Jun1927) and Dora I. Quick (27Nov1872- ). It is believed that he grew up in the village and attended the local schools.

At some period of time around 1915, William Erman Shoultes united in marriage with the former Rose E. Cook. Very little is known about their life together. There was a daughter born to them, but family legends have stated they divorced around 1925 and the care of the daughter became the responsibility of William's parents. It is believed that Rose E. Cook died in Florida.

William Shoultes was a barber by trade and spent most of his adult life and a resident of Binghamton (Broome County), New York. The researcher remembers his name in the telephone book during the 1950s and recalls wondering if he was related.

William Erman Shoultes died of cancer. There is no gravemarker, but it is speculated that he is buried with his parents in Hope Cemetery, in the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York.
