Looking for information on William KING, living in the Factoryville and Waverly area. He was a rev. soldier who enlisted in Sept. 1776.

Had a son William, who fought in the War of 1812.

We believe that she was the dau. of George Clayton KING and Cynthia Rosalie BROWN.

We believe his father to be George KING who married Sarah HOLLENBECK.

We would appreciate any help on this line. Thank you

Peggy Gillette Sun Sept 2, 2001 - Email address invalid 1 Oct 2020

My husband’s grandparents were Ward Elmer GILLETTE (b. 09/19/1894 d.12/01/1970 in Candor, NY).

He was married to Sarah Rosalie HARFORD(b. 10/29/1895 in Reniff, NY d. 05/02/1999 in Waverly, NY).

I am trying to locate the line of ancestry on Sarah’s side. Her mother was Dora Rosela KING (b.05/12/1879 in Lockwood, Tioga Co., NY, d. 1958 in Candor, NY buried in KING plot.) Her father was Ulysses Grant HARFORD (b.12/21/1871 in Reniff, NY d. 1944 buried Forest Home Cem. Waverly, NY)

We do know from information passed down, that there is a Rev. William Harvey KING in the line on Dora’s side but the information is confusing at this point.

We are hoping that somebody can help us fugure this out.

Thank you so much .

Laura Congleton Sun Sept 2, 2001

I am trying to locate the ancestors of Elliot FOSTER who -- with his wife Jane BEEBE -- lived in Apalachin and Owego in the early 1800s.

They had several children including: Johnson (died as a prisoner of war at Andersonville during the Civil War), Philemon, his twin Philena FOSTER FOX, Diana FOSTER SHORT, Martha FOSTER HOXSIE, Mary FOSTER BILLS, and Wesley FOSTER who moved to Iowa with his sister Mary and her husband Nelson BILLS.

I have a fair bit of descendant information I'd be more than happy to share.

I'm looking for Elliot FOSTER's ancestors. I'm also looking for the ancestors of Johnson FOSTER's wife, Almira HEDGLIN. She was a grand-daughter of Joel and Jerusha BILLS, but I haven't been able to clarify her HEDGLIN connection. I believe her brother was Washington HEDGLIN who later settled in Marcellus, Onandaga County, NY.

Thanks for any help.

Hiram was my gg grandfather.

Do You Remember Any Of These People?
CONEY/VAN OSTRAND

My husband's father was Robert E. VAN OSTRAND of Tioga/Tompkins County. He married Ina Mae NEUMIRE 1938, in Spencer, NY.

His father was Truman Oscar VAN OSTRAND, mother was Catherine I. CONEY, they had eleven children, all of whom were married at least once.

Truman's father was Peter VAN OSTRAND b 1810 Saratoga County, NY possibly Halfmoon, Peter's first wife, (unknown) but have connected two children to that union:
a son, Michael E., who married Mittie HEMINGWAY, who we believe had at least four children, and a Peter J., who married Lucinda DAVENPORT, we believe this couple had ten or eleven children. Hope to find out if Peter, the elder, and first wife(unknown) had more children, does any one know of more children in this first marriage?

Peter, the elder, then married Catherine J. NOWLAN of Broome County, know of at least 5 children from that union:

1. Adelaide born 1848 Tompins Co. married Benjamin GENUNG II,
2. Charles b. 1850 Tompkins Co,
3. Giorgeanna born 1852 Tompkins Co,
4. Uleledia(spelling?) b. 1854 Tioga Co.,
5. Truman Oscar b 2-11-1857.

Does anyone know of more children?

Know Catherine I. CONEY b. 1871, had at least one sister, Maime, possibly three brothers, Charles, George, Stephen, maybe more.

Possibly her father was John CONEY, born Ulster Co, who was a farmer in 1855 in Spencer.

Hoping to learn:

1. Who Peter's first wife was and if there were more then two boys.

2. Place and date of Truman and Catherine's marriage and

3. Parent's names for sure of Catherine CONEY and

4. Other siblings of Catherine.

Your help will be appreciated.

I have been looking for information on the ORCUTT and SCOTT families for quite some time now. I have hit a dead end.

My 2nd ggm was Sarah SCOTT - her grandfather [b. England] homesteaded in the Wyoming Valley but moved to the Owego area [late 1700s].

She married Thomas Miller ORCUTT -[born in Albany l834- may have twin brother Jacob- possible sons of "FJR" ORCUTT - lived in Tioga city.] They had a daughter Mabel in 1850 in Owego.

They later moved to Kansas then to Leadville, Colorado during the silver rush.

Both the ORCUTTs and SCOTTs may have married into the RUSSELL family.

Anyone able to help?

Stephen Carlile Wed Jul 4, 2001

I believe my MILLER family came from New York and the Tioga County area and I am trying to track them down. I am hoping someone has already worked on MILLERs in the Tioga area as it appears there were two Hugh MILLER families living there in 1800 and 1810.

I located my oldest MILLER ancestor, Hugh MILLER, on the 1820 Federal Census in Clark County, Illinois, enumerated next to Hugh MILLER, Jr. his son.

In the 1850 Clark Co., Census, Hugh MILLER is listed as 60 and born in New York, as is his wife Mary. There are several other MILLERs, probably Hugh's sons, listed on the same census page with Hugh in 1850. I am assuming that by 1850 Hugh MILLER Sr. is deceased and the Hugh MILLER listed in 1850 is the Hugh MILLER listed as a Jr. in 1820. In any event, the Hugh MILLER listed in 1850 would have been born about 1790 in New York. I am told that in the 1800 New York Census Index there is a Hugh MILLER listed with two males between the age of 0-10 and two females between the ages of 0-10, which would fit in with my Hugh MILLER family. There is a second Hugh MILLER listed with 2 males between 0-10, 1 female between 0-10 and one female between 10-16. both of these Hugh MILLERs are listed in Tioga County.

There is one Hugh MILLER listed in the 1810 census in Tioga County and none in 1820. I strongly suspect that one of the Hugh MILLER families in Tioga county are my family. I also believe that Hugh MILLER senior was married to an Emma BARR, and that one of their other boys was named William C. MILLER (who also is living in Clark Co., Illinois in 1850). Some of the MILLERs may have moved to Pennsylvania, but I believe the families finally ended up in Clark Co., Illinois for about three or four decades.

There may be a connection between my MILLER family and the John MILLER listed as a state assemblyman from Tioga during the period 1804 - 1807.

If anyone has any information on the MILLERs, BARRs, or a KETCHUM surname from Tioga County, I would appreciate your contacting me. let me know.

Robert Lefler Mon Jun 11, 2001

Researching: James CARLEY, Foster UPDIKE, Jared TREMAN, Benjamin LEFLER and particularly, Chestina TREMAN, w/o James CARLEY 1796-1819 and d/o Jared TREMAN and John LEFLER, and his son, Christopher LEFLER, 1791-1838.

Benjamin LEFLER may have been in Owego. He is a s/o Christopher. There are other LEFLERs and CARLEYs but we don't know if we are related.

Also by our family, we believe that James CARLEY had brothers John and Abram, and that Abram, in turn had brothers John, James, and Jefferson CARLEY.

Christopher LEFLER had a son who was Charles HUNTER LEFLER and my ggggrandfather born about 1823 in Ulysses. It may well be that the HUNTER name was from Jack HUNTER, the English name for the well known Indian Chief. The father, Christopher, was a veteran of the War of 1812. By 1830 all these people had died or moved down to Daggett,Pa, where ,in fact, Charles married Lucinda DAGGETT.

Any clues will be followed unrelentingly!

D. Michael Strong Sat Jun 9, 2001 - Email address invalid 1 Oct 2020

I am researching an ancestor but have limited information.

I have documentation on my gg grandfather Jasper A. STRONG and his death certificate lists Reuben STRONG as his father.

Reuben married Mary ABBOTT and he is listed as from Tioga Co, NY and that they were married in 1809.

It looks like he may be listed in the 1820 Tioga census. There is also a Reuben STRONG in the Tompkins Co census in 1830. Jasper was born in 6 April 1829 but it's not clear if he was born in Tompkins or Tioga. He is in the Tompkins Co 1850 census. Jasper married Martha MESSENGER in Tompkins, Co in 1848.

I would appreciate whatever information you might have.

Jacqueline Williams McCarron Wed May 30, 2001

My ancester is Hiram WILLIAMS who married Abigail FORD in Hebron CT about 1785.

They moved to "Ford's Location" in Tioga Co. in 1795 (Ford had received 350 acres for surveying). This was in the vicinity of Catatonk, Candor.

We believed his son was Ira Williams, who married Oliver Cook UFFORD, but now suspect there may have been a generation between the two.(there are several generations which include the name "Ira" ).

Hiram was buried in Woodbridge Cemetery in Candor in January of 1852. He is listed in an a DAR archive of Revolutionary soldiers.

Any additional information about this family would be appreciated.

Helen Graves Thur Apr 12, 2001

I am seeking information on the George Washington HILL who married Elizabeth/Betsy TAYLOR. This is the family who appears on the 1855 census as living in Owego (I have found a similar, but different record for ANOTHER George Washington or Geo. W. HILL so it appears there were two of them living in this area).

The one I want is per the 1855 Owego census:
HILL, George W. 43 b. Scoharie NY
Elizabeth 37
Steven 17
John 16
Martha 13
Harriet 10
George 8
Elizabeth A. 6
Kyman 4
Mariah 2
(Mariah b. 1853 is my husband's ancestor; she married James SWARTWOOD in 1869 after he returned from the Civil War.)

On the 1865 census I found this family:
BABCOCK, Franklin - married 2x
Elizabeth 50 - married 2x
Betsy 16
Lyman 14
Maria 12
James W. 7 (born ca. 1858)
Rosetta 4 (born ca. 1861)

Thus, it appears that Geo. Washington HILL died between 1860-1865 and that his widow married Franklin BABCOCK. Her older children were out of the home, but the younger ones were living with their mother and step-father.

If anyone has info on this family, please contact me or post to the Tioga Co., NY list. Many thanks.

Ezekiel WILLIAMS was born c. 1755 in prob Upper Smithfield, PA. His christening dated 23 March 1755 is found in the Ref Dutch Church of Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ. However, his parents lived across the Delaware River in Upper Smithfield. His parents were John WILLIAMS and Leah DECKER. John WILLIAMS was born in England and lived in Upper Smithfield, PA. No record of his ever being in CT.

About 1783 Ezekiel WILLIAMS married Lydia WESTBROOK, dau of Benjamin WESTBROOK and Catherine WESTBROOK (yes, her maiden name was WESTBROOK). I have found only 2 children for Ezekiel WILLIAMS and Lydia WESTBROOK. Both were daughters:

1. Catherine born ca 1785 who married ca 1803-1804 Benjamin SWARTWOOD, Sr.

2. Leah/Lea born 20 May 1788; chr 27 Oct 1788 while the family lived in Wyoming Valley, Luzerne Co., PA. The chr record is listed in the records of the Machackemack Red Dutch Church, Deer Park, Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY. (The minister of the church went on a visit to Wyoming Valley in the fall of 1788 and christened several children while he was there. Leah was one of the children. Since Catherine was not chr at the same time as her sister, I believe she was chr shortly after birth ca 1785 somewhere else.

1790 census Ezekiel WILLIAMS, wife, and 2 females are living in Exeter, Luzerne Co., PA. There are many WILLIAMS families there, but they were from CT. At some time between 1790-1800, Ezekiel WILLIAMS moved to Tioga Co., NY, and settled in the Halsey Valley.

According to probate records in Tioga Co., NY, there is no will for Ezekiel WILLIAMS but there is an inventory dated March 1803 which indicated he died by then.

I am seeking further information on this family. What happened to Ezekiel's widow Lydia? If alive when her husband died in 1803, she would be only about 46 years old. Did she remarry or did she remain a widow? If she was alive, she was left with 2 daughters. Catherine would be about 18 years old when her father died. Leah would be about 15 years old. Catherine did marry Benjamin SWARTWOOD ca 1803-1804 based upon births of their children. Did Leah WILLIAMS marry 1805-1810?

Note: I have found no connection between my Ezekiel WILLIAMS b. 1755 in PA, son of John, school master from England, to the many WILLIAMS families in Luzerne Co PA and Tioga Co. NY who were from CT.

If anyone has any information on Ezekiel WILLIAMS, his widow, or two daughters, pls contact me or post to the Tioga Co., NY, list. If anyone has access to the 1810 Tioga Co. census, would you please look to see if Lydia WILLIAMS is on it.

Many thanks.

Researching Brewer DECKER, 1770-1838 and wife Maria.

They appear to be in the 1800 Tioga Co, NY census before they move on to Athens Co, OH by 1817.

I have no ancestral information on them. Wondering if anyone has further information on these various DECKERs:
John DECKER, who had a ferry service in 1800
Teunis DECKER 1765-1835, who married the widow of Benjamin WILMARTH
and other DECKERs of that early time in Tioga Co, NY.

I see references that I picked up at the library in the:
HISTORICAL GAZETTEER OF TIOGA CO, i.e:
p. 179 Phoebe DECKER, m. CORTRIGHT
p. 192 Joseph DECKER, m. Sarah CLARK, d/o A. CLARK, whose 2nd wife was Mary DECKER
p. 241 Teunis DECKER & Alexander WILMARTH census
p. 246 Teunis DECKER & Alexander WILMARTH information
p. 480 John DECKER ran ferry service
p. 481 DECKER & CORTRIGHT ferry svc

A grand-daughter of Brewer DECKER married a Nelson WILMARTH , who moved back and forth from Olean area of NY and Athens CO, OH, at one time ran a riverboat/tavern, and settled for awhile in the area now known as Portville, New York, on the Allegany River only a few miles from Olean.

Therefore, the DECKER/WILMARTH connection from the book picked my interest.

In other words, I'm searching for ANY DECKER connection in that area.......I have absolutely no idea of the siblings and parents of Brewer DECKER. All of his children and he and his wife died before the 1850 census which would give any idea of where he was born.

Thanks for any help, any leads much appreciated.

James BARTRON, born 30 Sept 1833, Barton, Tioga Co.,NY, married Rosanna GLASPY, 5 June 1854.

Legend has it that the town of Barton in Tioga County was named for one of my great grandmothers. The story goes that when the townsfolk's decided to name the town they couldn't make up their minds so they held a name drawing. There was a man who adored my great grandmother and wrote the name Barton down instead of BARTRON. He thought he was spelling it correctly! I have no idea if this is true or not but it sure looks good in print!

Rosanna died 1862 shortly after giving birth to her fourth child.

Her husband then married Henrietta HULET and later moved to North Dakota.

I have much information on the BARTRON'S, but need birth date and family information on my GLASPY side.

She was from Potter Co., PA. Her mother was Maryann REES, born 30 September 1806 and her father was John GILLESPIE, born 4 June 1791. Maryann REES was the daughter of Ely REES and Elizabeth MC CULLOUGH.

Can anyone help?

I am trying to locate my 4th Great Grandfather, Stephen Sampson HASTINGS 1777-1856.

I don't know where he was born or who his parents are. I do know he married Sarah SQUIRES who was born in Cornwall, Litchfield CT on 7/13/1779 and died in Oxford, NY 9/4/1854.

They had 6 children. The only record I have found on them was in Smithville Flats, NY in 1810 in the Early Settlers and it states that they went to Tioga County shortly after that.

I have searched CT, Oxford and Pennsylvania where the rest of the family went, but I can't find any further information.

What I need is who Stephen Sampson HASTINGS parents are to connect a link to England which is where I am living at present.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm looking for descendants of or infomation about the family of Dr. Ezra W. HOMISTON -- born, Brooklyn NY, 10 June 1859 -- whose home and office were on Spencer's Main St. in the 1880s.

I'm seeking this contact because I'm at work on the biography of a doctor with whom Ezra HOMISTON's father, Dr. Joseph M. HOMISTON, surgeon of the 14th Brooklyn, practiced during the Civil War.

Any help would be appreciated.

My aunt, LAURA PETERMAN, born Aug. 28, 1874 in Shreve, Ohio, lived many years in Barton, near Waverly, New York. She lived to be 102 and died Aug. 11, 1976 in Milton, Penna. and was buried there.

She was married in PA to a farmer, Bert GOLDEN, born Aug. 21, 1869 died July 27, 1949 NY.

Her husband and children were all buried in that area. I believe all the members of that family are now dead.

Her oldest daughter was Ruth GOLDEN, born Jan 12, 1874 Waverly, NY, who married Thomas AUSTIN.
They had a son Fred AUSTIN, born Oct. 9, 1916 NY, died May 11, 1988 who:
married #1 Joyce WHITNEY daughter Ruth Lucile AUSTIN
Married #2 Alice KIDD dau Sue Ann AUSTIN.

Another daughter was Achsa GOLDEN, born Aug. 31, 1895 NY, died Dec. 5, 1977, who
married #1 Walter VANHORN and had a daughter Doris VAN HORN who married there.
She then married #2 Percy MILLER and had a son, Philip MILLER.

Her son was John Bert GOLDEN who died in Milton, PA I have his records and my aunt's.

I do not know the area I do not know where to look. I am 81 years old and live in Chandler, Arizona. Can you tell me how I can get information about them?

Can you help? Thanks.

My mother, in writing down all that she knew of her family, had entered what I believe would have been my gg grandfather's sister - Mary TENGELSEN HOLMES - that was it - no more....

I have always known that both of my maternal grandparents were from Norway. The very first bit of information I ever found in my geneology searches was my grandfather's name on the steamer OscarII arriving in New York 6/28/1909.... and his destination???- Uncle_____(unreadable-perhaps Durham) HOLMES at RFD#1 Apalachin, NY.

I am trying to tie MARY HOLMES to the TENGELSEN (TENGEL)family in Norway... I'm stuck on both sides of the Atlantic.

Can anyone help? Thanks

I am trying a new approach to see if I can find the maiden name of my 3g-grandmother.

Harriet surname unknown, was born about 1811 in Tioga Co., NY. Sometime after 1811, she or her family immigrated to Lincoln Co., Ontario. She died in Grimsby, Lincoln Co., Ontario 15 Feb 1873. She married most likely in Ontario to Alexander NELSON.

In the census records is listed 3 children, James b 1832, Hannah b 1835 and George b 1836.

My question. Is there anyone who has family or a tree branch that immigrated to Southern Ontario after 1811? I was told to look at the Stocking surname, but I haven't found anyone that has a Harriet listed with the birth date of 1811. To add to this problem, my instincts tell me Harriet was married once before she married Alexander NELSON, which would add to confusion.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
