Hazel (Franklin) Olmstead, 79, a lifelong resident of Nichols, N.Y., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004 at the Robert Packer Hospital, following a period of declining health.
Hazel was born on Oct. 9, 1925 in Windham, Pa., a daughter of the late Ray Edward and Mattie Elizabeth (Brown) Franklin. On July 4, 1945, she married Edward A. Oop Olmstead and together they celebrated 53 years of marriage. Hazel was a retired employee of the Darling Dress Factory in Waverly.
She was a past member of the Nichols American Legion Post Number 1624 and an avid sports fan of NASCAR, football, baseball and hockey.
Hazel is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sylvia Olmstead of Athens; her daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and Joseph Wagner of Rome, Virginia and Jeff Showers of Newmanstown, Pa., Gail and Patrick Murphy of Nichols and Evelyn and Charles Sandt of Ulster; a special sister, with whom she resided, Viola Snider; sister-in-law, Laura Franklin of Moravia, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Edward A. Olmstead; brothers, Charles and Edward Franklin; sister, Virginia Platt; and a son-in-law, Gary Sitzer.
Family and friends are invited to attend graveside services on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Nichols Cemetery with the Rev. Linda J. Gaige, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Lounsberry, officiating.
