Mary Elizabeth Shoultes was born on December 18, 1866 near the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. She was the sixth child born to Ira Jacob Shoultes (1827-1905) and Lana Snapp (1830-1894). The name Elizabeth appears to be a tribute to her grandmother Elizabeth Isabell Leip Shoultes (1798-1872) who was living with the family at the time of her birth.

Mary Elizabeth Shoultes attended the local schools during the 1870-1880 period according to the United States Census Report of 1880 for Tioga County. The extent of her education is not known.

Mary Elizabeth Shoultes united in marriage with Henry W. Stevens (1859-1935) of Owego (Tioga County), New York. There was one child born to them; Mabel (1887-1977) who married a Goodreau and lived her adult life in Owego as well. Her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Goodreau (????- ) married into the Richards family of Owego who operated the Richards Funeral Home. Mrs. Richards was also the children's Choir Director for the researcher during the 1950s in the Owego Baptist Church.

Mary Elizabeth Shoultes Stevens died from cancer complications on November 11, 1943 at the age of 76 years. Her obituary appeared in the November 18,1943 edition of the OWEGO GAZETTE and read as follows:

MRS. HENRY W. STEVENS

Mrs. Stevens was a daughter of Ira and Lana (Snapp) Shoultes, and was born on Dec. 18, 1866 at Newark Valley. She had lived in this village the last 50 years.

Mrs. Stevens leaves one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Goodreau of this village, one sister, Mrs. Ellen (Ella) Westfall of Newark Valley: one granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Richards, and one great granddaughter, Betty Ann Richards, both of the town of Tioga, and several nieces and nephews.
