Mary A. Kenyon was born at Oneonta, New York in 1840. She was the 10th child of Harland Kenyon (15Sep1800-3Dec1877) and Lydia Brightman (3Mar1805-15Dec1893). Her siblings were: Emeline (16Nov1823-????); Lorenzo (10Jul1825-????) who married Abigail Abbey; Lucy (11May1827-????) who married ??? Sawyer; Henry B. (1829-14Mar1875) who married Catherine A. ???; Joseph B. (16Mar1831-14May1889) who married Lucinda M. Decker; George L. (10Jan1833-15Nov1903) who married Charlotte Marian Smith; Benjamin (25Sep1834-15Dec1903) who married Sophia Snapp; Samuel (10Oct1835-????), James Talmage (27Oct1836-????); Charles E. (26Nov1842-????) and John H. (Oct1844-14Oct1856). The Kenyon family migrated to Newark Valley from Rhode Island. Many of her brothers and sister eventually became residents of Vienna Virginia.

Records indicate that Mary moved to the Newark settlement in Tioga County as a young girl. Very little is known about her youth.

During the early 1860s, Mary A. Kenyon united in marriage with Elijah Shoultes (1835-1912). Elijah Shoultes was born at Newark (Tioga County), New York in 1835. He was the son of Jacob Ira Shoultes (1798-1856) and Elizabeth Isabell Leip (1798-1872) and lived his early life on the farm of his father. Following their marriage, they took over the farming operation on the original homestead located along the Broome-Tioga County line. They appear in the 1860 Census for Cattaragus County, New York where Elijah and Seymour worked as farm laborers. At some period during the 1860s, the family returned to Tioga County. Their union gave birth to three children.

Another recently found record from the book, MAINE, NEW YORK - 125TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, MAY, 1973 states that "another plank house that is known of was the old Elijah Shoultes house up 38B in Broughamtown (or Dutchtown area). It has since been covered with siding and still live in today."

Mary A. Kenyon Shoultes suffered a sudden heart attack and died on July 26, 1905 at the age of 65 years. She is buried in the old East Newark Cemetery located near the village of Newark Valley (Tioga County), New York. Elijah suffered a crippling stroke in 1907 and became a resident of the Alms House (County Home) until his death in 1912.
