Christopher Michael "Chris" Burgert, 30, deputy Bradford County sheriff of 104 Hayden St., Sayre, died Wednesday, March 31, 204. Born Dec. 11, 1973, in Sayre, he was a son of Paul Burgert and Margo Nickerson Davidson. "Chris" as he was known by his family and many friends, was a graduate of Athens High School class of 1991.
Following graduation, he was employed by the Heritage Nursing Home in Athens, Pa. for eight years. While he was employed there he met his future wife, Kimberly Anna Steele, in 1991. Christopher and Kimberly were later united in marriage on Oct. 7, 1999, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. From 1996 to 2001 Chris served in the U.S. Air Force National Guard Security Police. Following Sept. 11, 2001, he was activated to serve in the National Guard in Saudi Arabia at the Prince Sultan Airbase. Chris received his honorable discharge from active military duty in March of 2003.
Chris was formerly employed as a police officer for the Towanda Borough Police Department for two years. At the time of his death Chris was serving as a part-time police officer for Sayre Borough, a position he had held for the past four years, and also was employed as a full-time sheriff's deputy for Bradford County, a position he had held for the past six years. Chris was a graduate of the Police Academy at Mansfield, Pa., in 1998. He was a dedicated law-enforcement officer and was a member of the Bradford County Drug Task Force. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 49, Troy, and the Pennsylvania Deputy Sheriff's Association. Chris was devoted to his family; loved spending time with his 2-year old son. Christian; and loved working for the Bradford County Sheriff's Office. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis and weight lifting.
Surviving are: his wife, Kimberly Anna Burgert, and their son, Christian Steele Burgert, both at home; his mother and stepfather, Margo and Ronald Davidson of Sayre; his father and stepmother, Paul and Dorothy Burgert of Monroeton; his father and stepmother, Thomas and Linda Muller of Farmington, N.Y.; two brothers, Paul Burgert of Sayre and Thomas Muller of Bluff Point, N.Y.; a step-brother, Richard Davidson and his wife, Jody Davidson, of Ulster; four stepsisters, Julie May and her husband, Boyd May, of Canton, Debra Chilson of Dushore, Nancy Mapes and her husband, Nathan Mapes, of Corning, N.Y., and Robin Sands of California; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Sandra Steele of Barton, N.Y.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Fawn and Timothy Shirley of Owego, N.Y.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Kara Steele of Nichols, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, John Steele of Nichols; an aunt and uncle, Michele and Kerry Conner of Towanda; an uncle, Daniel Nickerson of Adams Center, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be held Monday, April 5, at 1 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Jason Guillaume, pastor of the Ulster United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Barton Cemetery, Barton, N.Y., with Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Christian S. Burgert Continuing Education Fund established for Chris's son with the Ingersoll-Rand Credit Union, 199 N. Main St., Athens, Pa. 18810, in Christopher Michael Burgert's name.
